Monstera albo borsigiana (variegated Monstera deliciosa type) is loved for its white sectors and dramatic fenestrations. This UK‑focused guide covers light, watering, soil, humidity, feeding, repotting, pests, propagation and how to keep variegation stable.
At a glance
- Light: Bright, indirect; avoid midday sun
- Temperature: 18–27°C
- Humidity: 50–70%
- Water: When top 3–5cm is dry
- Soil: Chunky aroid mix
Light
Place by an east window or a south window with a sheer. Supplement with a 20–40W LED in winter to protect variegation.
Watering
Water thoroughly, then allow the top layer to dry. Always use drainage and empty saucers after 10 minutes.
Soil mix
- 40% peat‑free compost or coco
- 30% bark
- 20% perlite
- 10% charcoal/pumice
Humidity & temperature
Aim for 50–70% humidity. Keep above 15°C and away from draughts.
Feeding
Half‑strength balanced fertiliser every 2–3 weeks Mar–Sep. Flush the pot every 6–8 weeks.
Repotting & support
Repot every 12–24 months in spring. Provide a moss/coir pole for larger leaves.
Keeping variegation
- Increase indirect light if new leaves are greener.
- Prune back to marbled nodes if a vine reverts.
- Rotate weekly for even exposure.
Pests
Manage thrips, mites and mealybugs with weekly insecticidal soap for 2–3 weeks; improve airflow.
Propagation
- Select a node with an aerial root.
- Cut 1–2cm below the node.
- Root in water or sphagnum at 22–26°C.
- Pot when roots reach 5–8cm.
